Cask effect

May 22, 2014

It is known that the whisky is aged and matured in casks so that it can attain its colour, aroma, taste and finish. These casks are made of wood, not of any ordinary wood but only of oak wood. Yes, whisky is matured in casks that are made of oak wood only. It is not only a legal requirement but oak wood is flexible and solid both and adds to the distinct flavours to the whisky in the cask. Two species of oak are used – American Oak and European Oak.

Casks & Barrels

Normally, fresh casks are not used for malt whisky as its strong woody smell overpowers the aroma and taste of single malt whisky that one would like to have. So these casks are usually used for other beverages like bourbon.

Now, American regulations do not allow Bourbon casks to be used again for Bourbon production. So these used casks are bought by distilleries Scotland and in other European countries at cheaper rates for maturation of whisky.

Single malt whiskies that are not matured bourbon casks are matured in Sherry casks to give them an exotic and distinctive flavour. These Sherry casks mostly come from France or Spain where they have already been used for Sherry making.

Black Dog Triple Gold Reserve is triple matured and truly refined. It is the only blended Scotch that is produced involving a triple maturation process.

Triple Mature Process

The triple maturation process which involves Grain whiskies and Malt whiskies separately matured in American Bourbon Casks and then blended together and matured again in Oloroso Sherry Butts for an extra longer period of time to give the blend a distinctive flavour and a delicate finish.

Sherry butts are normally made of European oak. Sherry butts used for maturation of Black Dog TGR are imported from Spain. ‘Oloroso’ in Spanish means scented. American bourbon casks and Oloroso Sherry butts, thus have an amazing cask effect in the triple maturation of process of Black Dog TGR.
